Adult Programs Director

Starting Wage: $19-22/hour (based on experience and skills) with benefits

Hours: 37.5 hours a week. Usually Monday to Friday but some work on evenings and weekends.  Flex time available.

Full Detailed Job Description

The Adult Programs Director oversees all the PEI Literacy Alliance’s programs and projects aimed at adults, and enables program staff members to work effectively and productively towards the achievement of the goals of the PEI Literacy Alliance. The Adult Programs Director reports directly to the Executive Director.


  • Receive and refer phone calls and emails daily
  • Correspond by email and mail daily
  • Maintain a filing system (for both paper and digital documents)
  • Schedule and attend meetings and appointments with other staff, program partners and funders, community groups etc.
  • Take and distribute minutes/notes as needed
  • Troubleshoot technical difficulties of computer hardware and software and network connections
  • Develop and publish Alliance print and promotional materials such as: brochures, newsletters, annual report, fact sheets, handouts etc. in consultation with other staff

Program Development and Management

  • Research on a per program basis which includes assessing the needs of the community and identifying gaps in literacy services.
  • Develop programs based on research outcomes
  • Develop and write proposals in consultation with the Executive Director
  • Develop program evaluations in consultation with the Executive Director
  • Compose interim and final reports in consultation with the Executive Director
  • Maintain good communication and relationships with program funders
  • Develop project budgets with approval of the Executive Director
  • Make presentations on behalf of the Alliance to community groups, government agencies, media and partner organizations
  • Coordinate all aspects of program and related events including: planning, promotion, implementation, budgeting and evaluation.
  • Purchase program resources and supplies within budget
  • Manage program resources
  • Collect and analyze program evaluations
  • Prepare interim and final program reports in consultation with other staff
  • Coordinate aspects of other programs and events as needed
  • Manage budget for other programs and events as needed

Communications and Human Resource Management

  • provide job training, orientation and support to adult programs staff and volunteers in consultation with the Executive Director
  • Interview and hire program staff applicants in consultation with the Executive Director
  • Manage staff hired for programs
  • Schedule and chair meetings of program advisory committees
  • Develop and implement training and orientation for volunteers and program staff
  • Communicate with program partners and funders
  • Provide support to program staff and volunteers
  • Manage volunteer base
  • Provide media interviews
  • Write and distribute press releases and PSA’s
  • Report to Executive Director regularly

Financial Management 

  • Monitor program budgets
  • Maintain clear records of program expenses

Board of Directors

  • Assist in the coordination and production of the Alliance Annual General Meeting
  • Attend Board Meetings as directed by the Executive Director

Fundraising Initiatives

  • Assist in the coordination and production of fundraisers such as the PGI, Raise a Reader and any other fundraising initiatives

Plain Language

  • Develop all promotional materials in plain language (we offer training in this area)
  • edit all written work for plain language (we offer training in this area) 

Other duties as assigned.
