About the Program
The PEI Volunteers for Literacy Program offers free one-to-one tutoring for adults, including seniors, in PEI. The goal of this program to is to fill a long-standing gap in literacy services in Prince Edward Island. This program will also engage seniors in their community as volunteer tutors and mentors. Tutors will be provided with professional development, resources, support and tutor matching services. One-to-one tutoring is planned to begin in September. This program is made possible by the generous support of United Way of Prince Edward Island and New Horizons for Seniors. If you are interested in tutoring services or want to volunteer, please contact us.

Program Phases:
In April 2015, a small advisory council of 3 seniors will be convened to guide the program, give advice to Alliance staff and lead us in making connections with various seniors groups across PEI.

2015/2016/2017

Phase 1 (May - July) - Each year, the Alliance will promote the program by delivering face-to-face presentations to community groups across PEI. It will also promote the program through media, online and through our member networks, such as Holland College, Career Development Services and the PEI Public Library Service.

Phase 2 (May - August) - Each year, the Alliance will recruit 10 volunteer tutors (adults 50+) and 10 adults in need of tutoring.

Phase 3 (October) - Each year, 10 volunteer tutors will receive professional development and orientation.

Phase 4 (October) - Each year 10 volunteer tutors (adults 50+) will be matched with 10 adult learners. The Alliance will facilitate and support this matching process. Tutoring sessions will begin at this time and continue throughout the fall and winter.

Phase 5 (March) - Each year, program evaluation and adult learner assessments will be performed.
