OUTLINE OF FAMILY LITERACY PLAN FOR PEI

The participants at the Family Literacy Community Consultation held on January 28, 29 and February 4 agreed on the following components of the strategic plan. They also developed an operational plan for year one.

Vision

Literacy within families is valued throughout life, for its own sake, for and by all people.

Goal

 Improve literacy through family focused activities and programs.

  • Family literacy
    • is intergenerational
    • is not restricted to blood relations
    • involves children
    • is community supported
    • empowers people
    • is a community responsibility
  • Family is the first teacher.
  • Family literacy programs must be accessible to all.
  • Everyone in the family has the capacity and right to learn.

Objectives
  1. Increase communities'/society's understanding of the meaning and contribution of family literacy.
  2. Create an environment where it is safe to say you have a problem with reading.
  3. Ensure family literacy is an inclusive term.
  4. Celebrate everyone's family literacy success.
  5. Promote reading as fun, pleasurable and entertaining.
  6. Provide fun literacy activities for families.
  7. Advocate government support for standardized kindergarten for all children.
